It Only Takes 1 Girl to Change the World and we have 5!

We are five long-distance swimmers from Canada raising money for Plan International's "Because I Am a Girl' campaign.

Coming from all different backgrounds of swimming and all at different stages of our lives, we have  discovered one common passion..... we love to swim.  And not just swim like "normal" people.... you see we all belong to a very elite club.... the marathon swimmers club.  A club where people do crazy things to challenge themselves to the limits of what our bodies can handle.  To challenge our minds, our bodies and our souls.... to achieve the unthinkable.

4 of the 5 ladies have their names engraved on a monumental stone of achievement at Niagara-on-the-Lake and 1 young lady has made her mark in the swimming world by crossing the English Channel.

This summer, these 5 ladies will take on a challenge that will not doubt prove that with a goal and a dream, the impossile can be possible.

Starting in Kingston Ontario, they will splash into Lake Ontario July 23rd 2013..on their journey to land at Spencer Smith Park, Burlington Ontario on July 28th 2013... yes that's right...5 days of swimming...continuously.  They will swim in a relay style, each swimming for a two hour period then being taken over by the next swimmer who will go forward and keep the momentum going.  We have an amazing crew that will keep us safe from harm and keep us on track.   This huge undertaking works only with a dedicated and determined crew of many including 3 coaches, 4 sailboats, 4 powerboats, 2 zodiacs, medical staff on site at all times, professional photographers to capture our swim and land crew who will be working with us to create and continue the "buzz" of our swim and keep the public informed of our progress.

We will be in contact at all times via social media (facebook, twitter) radio, televison and newspapers to aid in our goal of raising $300,000 for Plan Intenational's "Because I am a Girl" movement.

Because I am a Girl is a global initiative to end gender inequality, promote girls’ rights and lift millions of girls – and everyone around them – out of poverty.  Girls in the poorest regions of the world are among the most disadvantaged people on the planet. They are more likely to live in poverty, more likely to be denied access to education, more likely to be denied medical care, and more likely to be malnourished, simply because they’re girls. And yet, studies show that if you give a girl enough to eat, an education and a safe environment, she’ll work to raise the standard of living for herself, her family and her community.

The Because I am a Girl initiative was founded by Plan International, one of the oldest and largest international charities in the world. Founded in 1937, Plan has supported boys and girls in the developing world for over 75 years through collaboration with children, their families, and their communities.  Plan knows that by investing in girls and young women we can literally transform lives and lift entire nations out of poverty.

Our 5 ladies have come together to support this Wonderful Charity and Amazing Organization… We believe that we are valuable, and that we do deserve the right as girls to be given the opportunity to succeed in our community, our country and worldwide.  Join us…in celebrating the power of girls and women everywhere!
With your help in a donation to our charity and your encouragement, WE WILL make this a summer to remember!  We encourage you to "like" our facebook page of Because Girls Can to keep in touch with us through our website (ready to launch soon) at www.BecauseGirlsCan.ca  and to twitter with us and cheer us on!  Plan to join us at our destination landing of Burlington's Spencer Smith Park.... and "Welcome Us Home" with cheers and bells ringing!
